Redilight is a solar powered LED skylight alternative, which has many benefits over traditional skylights.
Here’s an example of a recent installation we did.
We installed a Redilight LED skylight solution for a customer with limited natural light in parts of their home.
The family spend a lot of time in the open plan kitchen and living area which has a small window of sunshine in the mid morning but is very dark the rest of the day. Shadows cast by the alfresco and neighbouring homes reduce the natural light in this area. They also have a bedroom hallway and entry hallway which don’t get much sunlight through the day. This usually results in running the lights all day, every day.
The solution we installed was a Redilight system, with 250 watt solar panel and 5x LED lights called “sky fixtures”. We installed 3x square 48W LED sky fixtures spaced evenly in strategic locations through the kitchen / living area, a 24W round LED sky fixture in the entry hallway, and a 12 watt round one in the bedroom hallway.
The result was amazing. When the sun came out they ramped up to a nice bright light, and flooded the whole space with great light. The colour temperature and the amount of light was just like what you’d expect from a traditional skylight. They were well diffused, they didn’t cast shadows, and they had a wide spread of light. Then later in the day, as the sun began to fade away, the result inside reflected exactly what was going on outside. The sky fixtures dimmed down slowly and consistently at the same rate as the sunlight disappeared.
The customer was extremely happy with the result. They never have to run the lights during the day time anymore, and the room is now brighter than it ever was – even when the lights were on! It’s just like natural light from a top quality traditional skylight. (But without the placement restrictions and heavy price tag!)
They were also very happy aesthetically – the flush finish on the fittings made them just disappear, and because we’re not limited to the restrictions of traditional skylights, they could be installed exactly where the customer wanted them. So they were all in visually pleasing and well thought out locations, which made the end result stunning!
So what is Redilight?
Redilight is a solar powered skylight alternative. It transports light from outside to inside using electricity, rather than a big tube or chamber. The solar panel on the roof converts outside light to power, sends it down a wire, where the LED fixture converts it back to light again inside.
How Redilight works:
In standard installations, one solar panel powers all the LED fixtures. The system ramps the light output up and down depending on the intensity of the sun, just like a real skylight… But without the real skylight price tag, and without the complications of working around where timber and metal beams might be.
Why Redilight is great:
- No placement restrictions: you can have a sky-fixture in places where you can’t normally have a skylight – like downstairs in a 2 storey home, or in an area obscured by timber or metal construction.
- Less thermal loss – sky fixtures are installed under your existing ceiling insulation so there are no extra thermal losses you would normally get when a traditional skylight or window is installed.
- Smaller price tag – good quality skylights can be expensive to install – you have to cut holes in your roof for each skylight you want installed. Redilight runs multiple sky fixtures off one solar panel, which doesn’t need any big holes in the roof – making Installation more straight forward, more flexible, in in many cases, less expensive.
- Doesn’t add to your electricity bill since the panels run independently from their own solar power source. (Although you could also add on a day/night kit which will let you flick the sky fixtures on at night time and draw the power from the grid if you wish)
- Doesn’t get bugs inside it – bugs often find their way into the light tubes or chambers of skylights and then have to be cleaned out from time to time. Redilight doesn’t have any such space for bugs to crawl into.
Why Redilight is better than their competition
- Australian designed and backed
- IC4 rated, meaning they run cool enough to be covered by your insulation – no thermal losses you’d usually get with other brands
- Massive warranties so you know they will be reliable in the long term
- Looks great aesthetically – the finishing is really nice – flush mount sit into the gyprock ceiling and ‘disappears’
- Redilight is a Great Aussie business doing great Aussie business
Our recommendations
To make them work just like traditional skylights, we recommend installing cool white (5000K) fixtures because they have a colour temperature similar to the sun during the day. With no day/night switch they will ramp on gradually as the sun rises, be full brilliance on sunny days, then ramp off as the sun sets and be off all night.
But unlike traditional skylights, now we have a few more options to consider. We can install a day/night switch to turn them on at night, which then means we must consider which colour temperature will be the best fit in both circumstances. These considerations depend on the use of the room.
As a rule of thumb, areas you want extra light during the day should be cool white, working areas you use at night can be either cool or warm white, and relaxing areas should be warm white. Studies show that cool white helps your brain to stay alert and concentrate, and warm white helps your brain to relax and switch off. This is because cool white is what the sun produces during day time, and warm white is traditionally what light is available after the sun goes down. Using the correct choice can help promote healthy sleep patterns – it’s the same principle as ‘night mode’ or ‘night shift’ on smart phones and computers – they help by reducing the blue light content on the screen after sun down.
